People with a history of migration are becoming increasingly important in the German startup ecosystem. According to the Migrant Founders Monitor 2025, 17% of founders were born outside Germany, while the proportion of unicorns is as high as 23%. They are often characterized by a high level of education, determination and willingness to take risks, but also face particular hurdles.
With a new service page, Startup City Hamburg now provides them with comprehensive information and support that addresses their particular challenges and needs and serves as a guide through the Hamburg ecosystem.
Feedback from a workshop with founders, partners and institutions has been incorporated into the content of the site. The site focuses on three major start-up challenges and practical checklists for the most important steps.
For example, the site provides a comprehensive overview of contact points, divided into “Funding & Accelerators”, “Supporting Organizations” and “Network & Community”. This is supplemented by information on universities and integration and language courses. The Startup Port as a network of start-up centers of 10 universities and research institutions, where many founders with a history of migration are active, is also mentioned and linked.
In the coming months, the range will be continuously expanded and supplemented with editorial contributions – always in close cooperation with players in the ecosystem.
