Business metropolis Hamburg: New record for new business start-ups

In the first half of 2024, Hamburg reached a new high in business start-ups, as recently reported by the Statistics Office North: With 2,912 new start-ups, the Hanseatic city recorded an increase of a good two percent compared to the previous year, confirming its attractiveness as a location for start-ups.   From January to June 2024, a total of 2,912 new businesses were founded in Hamburg. This is the highest half-year figure since statistical surveys began in 2008. Compared to the first half of 2023, this corresponds to an increase of a good two percent. Despite a simultaneous increase in business closures by 15 percent to 1,467, the balance remains positive: a total of 1,445 more businesses were founded than closed. Notes: The establishment of a business (in contrast to small businesses, for example) is assumed if the legal form or number of employees indicates a greater economic significance. This is the case if the business is registered by a legal entity or a company without legal personality (partnership). Businesses set up by natural persons can also fall under this category, provided the person is entered in the commercial register, employs staff or holds a craft license at the time of establishment.
